The defense industry, or arms industry, is an industry responsible for the production and sale of weapons and military technology. The defense industry consists of a commercial industry involved in research and development, engineering, manufacturing and service of military supplies, equipment and facilities. Companies that produce weapons for a state's armed forces and security forces or civilians are also referred to as arms dealers or defense contractors. Government institutions also operate in the arms industry by buying and selling weapons, ammunition and other military equipment and equipment.
